ADDRESS: 415 Conant Street., Maumee, Ohio 43537
ARTIST: Rudolph Scheffler
TITLE: Communication
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The former Maumee post office is no longer an active, operating postal facility. It is now home to the local business. However, there are reports the mural still resides in the building. It previously resided in the mail lobby on the wall above the former postmaster’s office.
YEAR: 1936
I was confused when I visited Maumee, I had originally though this was still an active post office. The records that I have been checking stated it does have a mural. unfortunately, I have been unable to find any further information regarding the where-a-bouts of it.
Does anyone out there happen to know if the mural still resides inside the old post office? When I visited it was during Thanksgiving holiday and whatever business is located here was closed. Darn I said to myself. I’ll be back in the area again soon I hope. I’ll have to plan my visit more carefully.
Thanks,

I grew up in Maumee, David, and loved the post office mural (of Anthony Wayne and Native Americans). When the new post office was built, I called them to inquire about the mural. The person I spoke with said, yes, they had it, but I have my doubts (and felt that I was being rushed off the phone). I’m not sure if it’s in the new building on Ford Street, but I rather doubt it. That would be sad, because it was a great painting–better than most WPA murals–and a conspicuous part of any cultural life Maumee had.

I worked at the Maumee Post Office and the mural was installed in the new post office.

Hi Patty,
Thanks for the comment and confirming the mural is in the new building. I haven’t had a chance to see this one in person. I’m really looking forward to seeing it.
Do you when the mural was moved by chance?
Take care
David

The mural was moved at the time of construction of the new building. It is in a meeting room next to the clerk station. I am sure if you ask to speak to Tammy she would be happy to show you the mural.

Thanks for the comment Mark. Do you still live in the area. I was there last year and I think saw it through the window at the old building.

I get to this area about once a year but it is always during the holidays and most business are closed. I have to remember before I head out and maybe make arrangements to see it in person.

The mural is in a meeting room of the new PO. I was not allowed bck to see it myself..but the postal manager gladly took pictures with my camera.
