POST OFFICE FANS is dedicated too celebrating our nation’s post offices. We achieve this in a number of ways.
- First, we create an article for every building we visit. We publish and share this information here on our website: www.postofficefans.com.
- Second, we publish books as a reference for you to use while traveling or researching post office murals. Please visit our Bookstore for our current offerings.
- We create videos for each building which houses artwork created during the Great Depression of the 1930’s. These can be found on our dedicated YouTube Channel.
- Third, we share our work and inspire others through social media like our Facebook page and X feed.
Who is behind this site?
David W. Gates Jr. is the primary author behind Post Office Fans. He has been visiting and photographing post offices for over 20 years.
It started while he was on vacation in northern Wisconsin.
We drove through the small town of Athelstane, WI while on our way to a white water rafting trip and saw the local post office building. I think we all commented how much it resembled a two car garage. We we’re all amused and decided to take our picture in front of the building.

During this same road trip we ended up stopping to take our picture in front of several other small-town post office buildings including Pembine, and Amberg. As the saying goes, “the rest is history”. I’m hooked and have been photographing and documenting post office buildings ever since.
After discovering there are buildings which have artwork, history and artifacts, he has taken the time to record his work in more detail. In the past David’s method was just driving around taking pictures of as many buildings as time would permit. Today his road trips are more focused on visiting each building which houses or housed New Deal artwork.
Now that he has amassed a collection of photos and stories, he has decided to share his work with all who are interested.
What else does David do?
Believe it or not David does have another life outside of his post office work. Although if you ask his family they may laugh and disagree.
David also maintains an author website at David W. Gates Jr. He currently resides in Crystal Lake, Illinois with his, wife, son and two cats.
Until next time, get out there and visit a post office. Or better yet send a letter or post card. And if you want our mailing address please head over to our contact page.
Thank you,
